Herculaneum buried stories

Fascinating evenings encompassing archaeology theatre, virtual reality
and light paths

again from June 2014
In 79 AD, a glowing cloud of gas and ash with a temperature of 400° rolled down the slopes of Mount Vesuvius to attack Herculaneum. The few victims found within the city, including a newborn baby in its cradle, indicate
that the majority of
the inhabitants had already left their homes, resorting to the sea as an escape route.
When the surge reached the beach area, three hundred evacuees died instantly of thermal shock, who had taken refuge in the shelters for boat (arches), which opened on it. A boat, m 9 in length, was found capsized next to the victims.

Herculaneum buried stories
The real and the virtual, historical stories and splendours of light, theatre and music make for an exciting nocturnal voyage through the buried stories of the ancient Herculaneum

The journey begins with the virtual story – told through 3D images – of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and continues with a guided tour by an archaeologist.

Reperti eruzione Vesuvio ad Ercolano The walk, in addition to offering an extraordinary view of the site from above, leads to the Padiglione della Barca (Boat Pavilion), specially open for this event, where this extraordinary find is shown and others connected to maritime activities.

The descent continues to the Roman city, following a path of
light and sound, to the arches where a timeless character gives a striking theatrical performance, sharing his thoughts on the ephemeral existence of humans, tracing the “buried” stories of men, women, the old and the young up to the unexpected catastrophe, thus offering the spectator a “special” point of view about the value of existence.
