The Territory

Between Naples and Sorrento, between the volcanic fire of the imposing Mount Vesuvius and the crystal clear waters of the Gulf of Naples there is a territory, a jewel box filled with historical/natural attractions that takes the name of Vesuvian Coast.
Mount Vesuvius has a strong influence on the landscape and on its people. For years that have learned to live with this volcano. The archaeological sites of Pompei are located here, along with the extraordinary age-old Herculaneum and the small and fascinating Oplontis at Torre Annunziata.
We recommend you start your visit of this fascinating coastline by climbing up Mount Vesuvius, until you reach the crater: from up there you can enjoy the view of the Gulf of Naples, a unique and unforgettable view between the sky and the sea. The trails proposed by the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio (Office of the Mount Vesuvius National Park) allows you to stroll amongst the typical Mediterranean vegetation, and along the rivers of lava and molten volcanic rocks that create a lunar type landscape, where you can also admire the works of art held by the open air museum, Creator Vedevo. Your tour must also include a visit to the Osservatorio Vesuviano (Vesuvian Observatory), an important location for international research in volcanology.
The tours of the Museo Archeologico Virtuale (Virtual Archaeological Museum); of the pole for scientific tourism of the Farming department and ofPietrarsa’s Railway Museum, that shows Italy’s first railway route Portici-Naples, are all extremely interesting. Evidence of Roman civilization and eighteenth-century architecture come together in a territory that has always been destined to wellness and beauty. The Reggia di Portici (Palace of Portici) and the noble residences of the Bourbon court are known as “Ville Vesuviane (Vesuvian Villas)”, eighteenth-century villas built by great designers and architects of the time. The palace trail that starts from the current location of the Municipality of San Giorgio at Cremano and goes all the way to Torre Annunziata is known as the “Miglio d’Oro” (Golden Mile). The renovated villas or the ones under renovations hold exhibits, art and music reviews. An integrated circle of Vesuvian municipalities also award the Premio Troisi for the best comedies and sponsor the international Festival of Vesuvian villa music.
History, nature and archaeology all come together with folklore and religious tradition: the Santuario della beata vergine di Pompei (Sanctuary of the blessed virgin of Pompei), the Santuario della Madonna di Pugliano (Sanctuary of the Madonna of Pugliano) at Herculaneum, the Chiesa di San Michele (Church of Saint Michael) at Torre del Greco, located on the Colle of Sant’Alfonso, and the Basilica of Santa Maria delle Grazie at Trecase, each year, have flocks of pilgrims and curious on-lookers that continue their visit at the fascinating and beautiful Fish market at the Port of Torre del Greco or in the fashion Vintage boutiques of Pugliano known as Resina by the locals at Herculaneum, offering coloured and timeless images.
